His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday expressed deep grief and sorrow over the passing away of His Holiness Pope John Paul II.



"His Holiness contributed to spreading the principles of tolerance, dialogue and human rights throughout the world as well as bringing together followers of different faiths and religions.



"The Pope devoted his life calling for solidarity between rich and poor countries, defending the principles of peace, freedom and love and easing the suffering of humanity everywhere," His Majesty the King said.



With the passing away of Pope John Paul II, King Abdullah stressed, "we lost an influential figure who had tangible contributions and positive stands towards the legitimate Arab causes, especially the Palestinian cause."



His Majesty said the Pope "had also honorable stands towards the human values and principles called for by Islam."



Stressing the unique relations Jordan enjoys with the Vatican, King Abdullah described Pope John Paul II's visit to Jordan in 2000 and his tour of Mount Nebo and the Baptism Site, as "unforgettable and very meaningful."



Meanwhile, His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday extended a condolence letter to the Vatican, expressing on his behalf as well as Her Majesty Queen Rania and the people and the government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan the deepest condolences and sympathies over the passing of Pope John Paul II.
