Interfaith Dialogue

Jerusalem should be a symbol of harmony, of peace between the three monotheistic faiths. A city closed to the any of the followers of the three monotheistic religions is a catastrophe

There must be a new and global dialogue among people of different faiths and civilisations. Such a dialogue is essential, to reveal the commonalities that unite humanity… It teaches people to respect their differences. It opens eyes and hearts to the beauty of diversity. It helps disentangle fact from fiction. And it exposes the fraudulence of extremist teachings.

It is impossible to talk about interfaith harmony, especially between East and West, without also discussing conflict resolution in the Middle East.

“Our combined resources and geo-economic position make the Islamic world key to every major economic issue of our time – from creating a green global economy, to energy sustainability, and more.”

“It is you, and your colleagues across the Muslim world, who will create alternatives for our youth – power not powerlessness; opportunity not frustration; hope not anger.”

...monotheistic heritage of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Each honour a deeply familiar principle. Indeed, everyone here, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, will recognise it in the words of the Prophet Mohammad, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: "By Him in whose Hand is my life, none of you believes until he or she loves for their brother, what they love for themselves." This is the Golden Rule of our responsibility for others.

There is no clash of civilisations. But we have received a grave warning. And we know, too, that there are those among us who seek to deepen the fault lines. They would capitalise on our lack of understanding about each other, to set off an earthquake of anger, resentment and fear. This applies not only between East and West, but within Eastern and Western cultures…

The greatest enemies of Islam are those who distort the teachings bestowed upon us by God and His Messenger... It is time for us to stand together, to reaffirm what the greatest scholars of our tradition have said: no Muslim can call another Muslim a non-believer. Whichever of the eight great schools of jurisprudence you follow — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii, Hanbali, Jafari, Zaydi, Ibadi or Thahiri — you are a Muslim. Your life, honour and property cannot be violated…

As a start, let us confess that we, Muslims, have not always fulfilled our obligations towards our religion and towards ourselves. Some Muslims or those who promulgate 'Islamic' slogans have defamed Islam and Muslims, and harmed Muslims, intentionally or unintentionally…

Divisions between the children of the umma, acts of violence and terrorism practiced by some groups and organisations, what is going on in Iraq, Pakistan and other Muslim countries in the form of accusations of apostasy and the killing of Muslims in the name of Islam, do not correspond to the principles and spirit of Islam, and Islam disavows them. Such practices generate turmoil and corruption on earth, because they give justification to non-Muslims to judge Islam according to acts that Islam disavows, and subsequently interfere in Muslims' affairs…

Can you make a difference? The Quran tells us, explicitly, that if a person saves one life, it is as if he has saved all mankind. Such humanity is in the deepest spirit of all the People of the Book. Indeed, it's part of all great world teachings…

My country's vision is of an open, modern civil society rooted in true Arab-Islamic values: peace; the equal dignity of all people; the rule of law; and the pursuit of excellence. We strongly believe in tolerance and respect for others. Last November, Jordan issued the Amman Message to all Muslims and others around the world, reaffirming the true Islam of peace, moderation and progress…

The more serious challenge however, facing our Muslim peoples is the unjust accusations that Islam and Muslims are being subjected to and the continuous efforts to link Islam and Muslims with terrorism. This is happening due to others' ignorance of the principles of Islam and their malpractices that have no relation to Islam. It is one of our holiest duties as Muslims to portray Islam to others in its real form, that of a religion of tolerance, moderation, and rational and logical dialogue that shuns all forms of fanaticism and terrorism…
