King Warns Against Adverse Consequences of War on Iraq
Amman, 21 January 2003

His Majesty King Abdullah II warned that a war on Iraq would have had adverse impact on the entire region particularly at this critical phase of the Palestinian issue.

"We, in Jordan, have done our utmost to maintain a continuous dialogue between Iraq and the UN and to settle this crisis through peaceful means to avert peoples in the region the destructive consequences of war," said King Abdullah in interview with Abu Dhabi television.

The King said "Jordan First" was not a mere slogan. "Rather it is a major base for our national march now and in the future ... and a reference that could help us to decide on our position regarding various issues and challenges at the internal and external level," the King said in the interview, part of which has been screened tonight.

" Jordan First can never mean detaching ourselves from fulfilling our obligations towards our nation's causes nor from our role in supporting our Arab brethren, " the King added affirming that Jordan would remain an integral part of its Arab and Muslim nation. This slogan has been put forward to unite our internal front and rally our efforts to address our national problems for greater development, King Abdullah said.

Parliamentary elections will be held during the coming spring, the King said expressing hope the situation would be appropriate to hold the election in the best possible way.

The whole interview will be aired on Thursday by both Jordan and Abu Dhabi television.
