King Receives EU Commissioner for External Relations
Amman, 15 October 2002

His Majesty King Abdullah II affirmed on Tuesday during a meeting with the EU Commissioner for External relations Chris patten, Jordan's keenness to promote its relations with the EU through enhancing the partnership with Europe.

The King expressed hope that the aid that Jordan receives from the EU will enable the private sector to benefit from marketing Jordanian commodities and services in European markets and encouraging European companies to invest in the vital Jordanian sectors.

During the meeting which was attended by the Prime Minister, the Foreign and Planning Ministers as well as Jordan's ambassador to the EU, His Majesty underlined the importance that Jordan attaches to the role of the EU in supporting efforts of just peace in the Middle East and achieving security and stability in it.

Jordan signed last May the Jordan-EU Association Agreement that includes items for cooperation between the two sides in the economic, political, social and cultural fields.

Patten for his part expressed appreciation for the distinguished role played by His Majesty King Abdullah II in supporting peace and enhancing stability in the region. He affirmed that the EU will continue to support His Majesty's efforts to improve the standards of living of citizens as well as the investment climate.

The EU official had earlier met with the prime minister and the foreign and planning ministers and signed four agreements on behalf of the EU within the EU's 142 million Euro aid package to Jordan for the period 2002-2004.
