King meets UN and Arab League envoy to Syria
Amman, 23 October 2013
His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday met on with the UN and Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, who is currently visiting Jordan as part of a tour of the region.
King Abdullah voiced Jordan’s willingness to support and facilitate UN efforts to address the Syrian conflict through peaceful means.
During a meeting with UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, His Majesty vowed to provide all forms of assistance to ensure the success for his mission on Syria.
The King reiterated Jordan’s call for a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis that safeguards Syria’s territorial integrity and ends the suffering of the Syrian people.
His Majesty warned that any delay in reaching a political solution will inflict more suffering upon the brotherly Syrians and drive more refugees to neighbouring countries.
The King reviewed Jordan’s tremendous efforts to cope with the large number of Syrian refugees who place “unbearable pressure on infrastructure and already limited resources”. His Majesty called on the international community to help the Kingdom continue its humanitarian assistance to refugees.
For his part, Brahimi briefed His Majesty on his efforts with all concerned parties in the Syrian crisis to convene the projected Geneva II peace conference.
The envoy expressed appreciation for Jordan’s humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees despite its economic difficulties, calling on the UN and international donors to shoulder their responsibilities in helping Jordan in this regard.
The meeting was attended by Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury as well as Brahimi’s accompanying delegation.
