King attends UN General Assembly, meets heads of delegations
New York, 25 September 2012

His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday reaffirmed Jordan’s support for the efforts of the UN and Arab League to reach a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis that would preserve the territorial integrity of Syria and the unity of its people.

During meetings with world leaders and international officials in New York on the side-lines of the 67th UN General Assembly, King Abdullah called on the international community to support UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in his endeavours.

The King attended the opening session of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, where US President Barack Obama spoke before world leaders.

The UN General Assembly discussed world economic growth, sustainable development, international peacekeeping, supporting human rights and international law, as well as coordination between international agencies for disarmament, crime prevention and counterterrorism.

On the side-lines of the meeting, His Majesty received a number of heads of state and delegations, including French President Francois Hollande, Austrian President Heinz Fischer, Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansur Hadi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.

During the meetings, the heads of state commended Jordan’s reform process and its efforts to revive Middle East peace negotiations.

International leaders praised Jordan’s humanitarian efforts to host Syrian refugees, stressing the importance of international support for the Kingdom to provide services for refugees.

The leaders called on the international community to step up its role in reviving the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The King outlined the reforms Jordan is undertaking, which will culminate in the election of a new Parliament later this year.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury and Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN His Highness Prince Zeid Bin Raad attended the meetings.
